"Don't cry to US about Argentina, Sanford!"
I've actually been in a humorous mood after hearing about all this mess today on the radio and television. It just figures, doesn't it? Many of us go out on a limb to defend him against what we think are unjustified attacks by those we know to be corrupt and selfish politicians only to find that Sanford himself has dived right in there with them.
Well, I'm not going to cry about this. I'm going forward with a smile and laugh at these so-called "disasters" right in the face. This incident is NOT our responsibility and NOT our mess and we have absolutely NOTHING to apologize for nor to attempt to justify. We should not even appear to be in anyway sympathetic to Sanford. By leaving him to fend for himself we are not dumping him overboard. Remember, he was the one who JUMPED OFF our ship by his actions.
We can not be so caught up in the personalities of individual politicians that we can't dump them when it helps our mission to do so.
Sanford, in hindsight, did us the great disservice of identifying himself openly as a libertarian Republican (despite the imperfect fit) just a few weeks ago at the state convention. He has tainted by association the libertarian faction of the Republican Party with his shenanigans and may well resign in shame after the emails and other details of the torrid affair surface (as they're already beginning to). We cannot be too heavily invested in him as his administration quickly turns into a sick joke. We can't let a single politician sink the movement in this state because WE are all about principles over politics and are a rejection of the bread and circuses arena of "team sports" politics.
The medial properly perceive libertarians and Constitutionalists as the antithesis of big government fascism/socialism. They can live with Clyburn or Graham but they can not even tolerate our existence. They will use this incident to try to tear down the whole movement. We must resist falling into the role of Sanford's sycophants.
Right now, Jake Knotts is getting drunk with HIS power and will be lucky if he doesn't have a stroke or heart attack from the extreme mental high he is on from his successful whining to the press over the last few days that has culminated in this massive public defeat for Sanford today. Any presidential aspirations Sanford had have now given up the ghost.
Other players on this sleazy stage are likewise engaged in melodramatic displays of political triumph:
Brad Warthen is gleefully rubbing his hands together like a Dickensian antagonist.
Glenn McConnell is dreaming of state taxpayer funded construction projects named after himself in an endless string of monuments to his quid pro quo corruption.
Lindsey Graham is just grateful that no one will ever be catching HIM with a woman.
We cannot allow ourselves to be pulled into the theatrics of this tragedy by wailing, tearing out our hair, and rending our clothes. We have got to stay disciplined and on the attack against these and other traitor socialists and fascists. We must hold our heads high. This whole mess has absolutely NOTHING to do with us. The enemies of the Constitution will not find us huddled up in a corner and rocking on our heels.
Sanford has made his bed and then he had to lie about it. Don't cry to US about Argentina, Sanford! We are sick to death of ALL politicians and their corrupt habits.
Sanford can't keep up with us so we're going to leave him behind.
After the recent rally in support of Sanford's resistance to fascist financing, a friend made a statement indicating a real emotional attachment to Sanford. My immediate response to him the was that we can not allow ourselves to be putting these people on a pedestal that we're just going to have to pull them off of a few years later. They are politicians and are not to be trusted. While we may support a politician's actions, we must also remain eternally vigilant.
Our job has to be to tear these men and women down when necessary and letting them hit the ground when they've been foolish enough to jump off their own high horse. We can't throw our movement under these politicians and allow them to crush it with the weight of their scandals.
We must resist the temptation to be cheerleaders on the sidelines as they, as a group, tend to want us to be. We have to remember that we are activists pursuing OUR goals and OUR principles. When politicians deal with us it is on OUR terms and it is THEY who seek OUR support for their ACTIONS.
This is a desperate struggle we're in. Please do not underestimate where we stand historically. We're not going to succeed if we allow ourselves to be caught up in the tar-baby of political alliances with such supreme failures as Sanford has turned out to be. He can admire his mistress's tan lines and other features while we're hard at work.
To paraphrase Admiral Farragut: "D--- the politicians! Full speed ahead!"
