"Are You Suffering From Battered Citizen Syndrome?"
There is a willing suspension of disbelief among the population when it comes to their government. They believe the mythological construct of government and patriotism that exists in their minds and treat it as if it were real. It's all a dream, Dorothy! There are no munchkins hiding under the sunflowers and there's a pile of politician behind every cow and horse in the barn.
The delusion actually goes much deeper than a dream, however. It reaches a much darker, sicker layer of the human psyche in these people. Like a wife turning a blinded eye from the bloodied fist of her husband, they refuse or are unable to see the abusive nature of the relationship and make excuses ("Oh, he'll only ignore the law one more time!" Or, "Yes, I know he doesn't obey the Constitution but he's doing it all for me!") These subjects stay in their comfort zones because they feel too weak and too dependent to actually stand up to their abusers and take on the responsibilities of breaking up or radically redefining the situation. The population of Nazi Germany must have been like that. Otherwise they'd have tried and hanged Hitler in the 1930s.
The way of cowardice and irresponsibility is easy. It consists of citizens blindly following what others--those in power--tell them. The mental attitude is one of complete supplication to a higher HUMAN authority--also known as slavery--no matter how comfortable or happy one may be for a while. It's easier being property rather than taking on the responsibilities of being a human being. Those citizens let someone else take care of everything, walk about daintily, don't rock the boat, keep quiet, and accept whatever happens to them due to governmental actions or negligence--even if it means abuse or death of them or their loved ones. But then they're apparently willing to make that sacrifice, aren't they?
I am frequently amused at the aloof and arrogant attitude of so many people when you bring up politics. "Oh, I hate politics!" Or, "I don't have time for that." Or, "Politics is so booorrrinnnng!" Worst of all is when they support a politician and they can barely remember his name, much less what his stands on the issues are. Well, if they're the half of population under an IQ of 100, we should all be thankful that they're just too important to be bothered with such matters.
For the rest of us, if we're not cracking the whip above the heads of politicians, then they're using a red hot poker on us. That's a binary, either-or situation there and that's one that is definitely not a false dilemma! It's a fact of life called human nature and we can never let our guard down again as we have for so many decades. We're in a fight to the death for our country now. It's liberty or death, freedom or slavery. The outcome depends on how many people are rallied to the righteous cause of the 1776 Revolution.
How will you answer the call? Will you stand up and be counted or will you cower in the corner of your very comfortable cage?
Don't worry! Be happy! Be pathetic!
